Just in time for National Chocolate Chip Day (May 15, 2015, in the U.S. anyway, in case you didn’t know – I didn’t either, until it showed up in my Facebook news feed), I present Triple Chocolate “Chocoholic” Overnight Oatmeal complete with chocolate chips! I couldn’t very well take care of the peanut butter lovers of the world without also thinking about the chocolate lovers of the world, too. And don’t the two go hand in hand? And if I can make an easy, healthy high-protein recipe, of course I will. And of course you will, too. Right?
So, not only do I have chocolate chips in this oatmeal (show of hands, how many of you prefer oatmeal chocolate chip cookies to oatmeal raisin cookies? Uh-huh, that’s what I thought!), I also have chocolate protein powder AND the pure chocolate taste that comes from natural, unsweetened cocoa powder! (If you really want to be a purist, you could substitute raw cacao nibs* for the chocolate chips. A little too intensely “chocolate” for me, a.k.a bitter, but if you’re the type to go for the 99% cocoa dark chocolate – I can only handle dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa, max – then this is for you).
I’ll admit that my kitchen was chocolate central this morning! Today is Mr. Golden Graham’s birthday (Happy Birthday, honey!), so The Golden Graham Boy and I were up early this morning to bake the traditional Graham Family birthday cake of choice: my aunt’s Oatmeal Chocolate Cake So we had some pretty intense chocolate aroma emanating from the oven by 7am (not a bad way to start a Saturday, in my humble opinion! And yes, I AM still old-fashioned enough to actually use AND write out that entire expression, instead of “imo” or “imho.” And no, it’s not actually still National Chocolate Chip Day here, because we’re into May 16. Not that there is a celebration of chocolate chips in South Korea anyway). And on top of our special birthday breakfast of bacon and eggs (well look at that, I *can* do a Paleo breakfast), I also made some wonderful Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Pancakes to fuel me up for Saturday’s big lower body workout (jury’s still out on whether I’m actually going to get that workout done, what with all this blog posting!).
So, with all that chocolate-ness, it’s only natural that I would put it in my overnight oatmeal. I’ve started making a few different flavours on the weekend so that I have ready-made weekday morning breakfasts all lined up in the fridge. Easy, delicious and good-for-you!
Triple Chocolate 'Chocoholic' Overnight Oatmeal (High-Protein)
Chocolate for breakfast? Of course! THREE sources of chocolate come together in one bowl to give you triple-chocolate goodness that tastes great and is great for you!
Author: The Golden Graham Girl
1 cup (80g) rolled oats – make sure these are gluten-free, if you require
1 scoop (31g) chocolate protein powder of choice – I used Quest Nutrition Chocolate Milkshake Protein Powder*
2 tbsp (10g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup (250mL or 240g) unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup (113g) plain non-fat Greek yogurt
1 + 1 tbsp (5 + 5g) dark chocolate chips
1. Stir the dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl.
2. Add the wet ingredients and 1 tbsp chocolate chips and mix thoroughly.
3. Divide the mixture into two wide-mouth Mason jars or containers, garnish with remaining chocolate chips, and refrigerate overnight. Note the recipe easily halves for single servings or multiplies for more.

Enjoy straight out of the fridge – all you need is a spoon! And trust me, this is a much better choice than chocolate frosting or a bowl of Haagen Dazs ice cream for breakfast (although there’s a time and a place for that, too)!
